Every year we visit the lights at the Riverwoods. They have an amazing display with over 1 million lights, but some years we attend the Lighting of the Riverwoods. This is a free event where the Shops at the Riverwoods turn on their lights for the first time.
There is a small parade as Santa arrives and heads over to his home for the holidays at the Riverwoods. We love that they have FREE visits to Santa throughout the entire holiday season. After Santa arrives, there is a big countdown and then the lights come on! The entire shopping area is full of lights. It’s amazing!
After the lights are on, there are lots of free festivities to participate in: ice sculpting, prizes and raffles, visiting Santa, and live music. The stores are open and often offer special discounts or prizes, so you can also start your Christmas shopping. We had a lot of fun watching the ice sculpting and enjoying the beautiful lights. The Lighting of the Riverwoods usually takes place in the middle of November (November 18, 2022 from 6-8:30 PM, lights on at 6:30 and fireworks at 8:30), so check their Facebook page or website for the updated date! It’s definitely worth attending.
Tips for Families
- Arrive early to get a parking spot and so you don’t miss Santa arriving. That’s what the kids are excited for!
- Dress for the weather. We always make sure to bundle up because once the sun goes down, it’s cold outside.
- It will be crowded, so make sure to keep close tabs on your kiddos.
