We didn’t know where to stay when we went to Glacier National Park, so we did a little research on the areas of the park. We decided that we wanted to stay a few nights on the west side, and the Village Inn at Apgar seemed perfect.
The Inn is located on the south end of Lake Mcdonald and provides good access to the west side of the park. There are several good hiking trails in this area including: Rocky Point, Johns Lake Loop, Avalanche Lake, and the Trail of the Cedars.

The Village Inn at Apgar has some rooms with kitchenettes, which helps you save money on meals. We had breakfast and dinner right in our room (we always have sandwiches for lunch on the road). The kitchenette had some basic kitchen items, but we were glad that we had brought a few items we weren’t sure about (like a cheese grater). It’s nice to use real dishes and utensils.

All the rooms at Village Inn have a lakeside view. We drew back the curtains on the massive picture window and gasped when we saw how beautiful our view was. The lake was just meters outside our door. Mighty mountains thrust skyward in the distance. There was even a backdoor and two chairs outside so we could sit and watch as the boys played in the lake. Each morning we woke up to watch the sunrise, and one lucky morning we even saw an otter swim right past our room.

Village Inn at Apgar is affordable at around $230/night for the room we’ve described. There are rooms with a little more space, but no kitchens. Visit Glacier National Park Lodging for all the details. There are other great places to stay on the north and east side of the park, but make sure to spend at least one night on the shore of Lake McDonald. It was one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen!
