When I first started this site 5 years ago, I wanted to keep a record of all the campgrounds I’d visited with a review and recommendation for the best. Well, over 300 posts later, this is the first campground entry I’ve written.
The thing that makes Blackhawk Campground unique is that it is all group sites. We used a site for 50 people, which had room for around 10 tents and 2 trailers. There were 10 stalls for parking (2 long trailer spots & 8 car spots). The site we had was nice and shady, and we set up our tents right in the tall pines.

The campsite has flush toilets and water and there were three extra long tables surrounding the fire pit. Our one complaint was that the fire pit was really small for 50 people– just the standard sized ring you’d find in a regular campsite, which made cooking our tinfoil dinners pretty time consuming.

Across the road we had a large open field where we could play frisbee or football. It was also an awesome place to set up the telescope and stargaze. We could see the Milky Way and about a billion other stars.
The elevation of this campground is quite high (over 8000), and it got quite cool at night in the tents. You’d also want to be careful about which site you booked as not all of them were as shady as ours.
Make sure to try a hike like Grotto Falls or stop at Payson Lakes.
We liked this adventure so much that we decided to do it every year!
